literally laughed out loud just now.
i sent out an email:
hi, everyone!
i would apologize for the mass email . . .
i have finally secured a cell phone with a number attached to it . . .
part of the melodrama i have spared you resulted in my losing everyone's phone number except the few i have memorized. btw, natalie, it's been 14 years and i haven't forgotten yours yet! momanddad are safe, too . . .
thanks for being someone who talks to me sometimes!

my mom responded today:
Mara dear
Your message brought tears to my eyes! No, it wasn't its content or your reference to us, the creators, but the fact that you are the only person I know who - in salutation- puts a comma between hello and the name of the addressee. I've always thought and felt that that was the correct way in spite of the overwhelming evidence to the contrary. I have consulted several books that seem vaguely or firmly in my favour, while all the correspondence I receive contradicts me.
Thank you for confirming that I'm grammatically/punctuationally correct. It really means a lot to me!
Love,
Luisa, your mom
PS Well, this doesn't excuse your giving me false hope for a Sunday morning chat, or that you haven't returned my Monday call. But this is another story.
bwahaha. and hee hee. and tee hee, even. gotta love that lady.

Mara,
Your Mom is awesome. She should be in my family too:)
However, I do have a papa who insists on quizzing his children on grammar and once called me a pagan for not pre-warming the teapot.
Hey
wait a second! Ive just made a huge realization. I didn't get that mass email! Great, BUT! I'd better get a christmas card...
You know, I find it funny that mom corrected me to REMOVE that comma between the salutation and addresse while she was looking over my shoulder at an email I was writing a few months ago!! The injustice!!
Eternally grammatically damned (but looking forward to seeing you at Xmas :).
